Globalization vs Localization Website Design

Designer out there must have faced a problem that your design got rejected sometime. I want to discuss one of the reason. After reading a discussion titled The US whitehouse trump all our government website on www.dannyfoo.com/blog/, makes me wondering why this thing happened.

The reason is because we always got inspired by the globalization designs. What I mean by globalization design? Globalization design is most of website design that being featured in most css gallery. The minimalist design, more space in the design, clean, simple, easy to eye, fresh, not much decoration and what they called a web 2.0 features. This is all the characteristics of globalization design.

What about localization design? Well localization design is depend on what kind of design your country really pleased. I’m going to focus on Malaysia’s design. All sort of business SME to MNC even the government themselves choose to have a website that will fill in every space in the design with information related to their organization. Concept “jual sayur” what we usually called. I’m not so sure how to say this clearly but all malaysia’s designer must learn design from Yahoo! designer, I guess.

I’m not saying any of these globalization or localization is a bad design. Both is extremely nice depend on what is your target audience. It is the quality that the organization has to choose whether you want local or global visitors. It’s a headache to satisfy both right?

Lastly, Sorry to tell that Malaysian government still have to change their website design. Yeah, they did implement the localization design but for my opinion that is unacceptable for a professional organization. It makes the entire world think Malaysia doesn’t care about the world of internet.

Anyway, if anyone interested.

We GoSee-Design want to seek a designer that can design us any localization website design focused on automotive and business but we accept anything of course. yeah its true that designs are tough to satisfy all the audiences. they have to be really definitive

It’s interesting to read that designers from other countries have to face the same kind of problem. :-)

I absolutely understand what you described in your article – it’s just the same here in germany and so I often have to think different depending on wether I shall create a website for a german customer or a customer from literally any other country as the tastes seem to be significantly different.

Those tastes are that different that I sometimes see the portfolio of designers who just work locally and wonder how they could survive on their own working as a freelance web designer for years – often they absolutely don’t know about the most basic things, they don’t care about clean code or web standards and they charge huge amounts for the work they’ve done so this is really surprising for me sometimes. :-)

You’re absolutely right, even now I don’t care about clean code or web standards to develop website for my clients. It’s because they just don’t care about it, what they care is they want their website to be just like what they told us to do. I wonder why they still paying us for design consultation when they already provide their own layout. It’s kinda funny.

By the way Max, I’m so honored to see you here. You’re one of my favourite designer. :)

Muhammad Nur that’s kind of sad, eventually, they’re going to get someone to tell them that “you” have been doing it wrong, and you’re going to lose a lot of clients. I know, I’m the guying taking lazy developers clients in my country. Clean code and web standards may not always be necessary, but it does show a certain level of pride it what one is doing. Good luck with your mediocrity.

As for designing, I never have any major changes to make. Most of you seem to be quite fake, just doing web design because there’s a market for it. Once you sit down with a client and document their requirements and personal preferences, you as a designer should spit out something ball park. Perhaps I’m still small time, we’ll see.

Sad but true, anyway I’m stopping all my project for now due to personal reason. You’re also right actually, I do speak up my opinion. But when you’re working with client that are perfectionist, they sometimes make ridiculous changes that make us end up like their own employees. We just have to listen to them.

Another thing, they never think about us. They always dragging time from a 2 weeks project can become 2 months projects. Clearly we are not their employees, we’re being paid by project. So dragging time cause us a lot of trouble.

mat nur!!! i’ve been facing the same situation before. hehe. as a designer cum slave, most orgs managers are from the baby boomers era (they’re very conservative in thinking). unlike us whose came from the generation X and Y whereas we can easily adapt quickly to any changes, these managers seems hard to accept those so called “globalization web designs”.

in the end, we as designers dump all contents in the main page plus a heavy flash based banner (ohhhhh flash based banner is a must in every org website — especially animated fireworks). hahaha. not to mention all those funky contradict colours. hahaa

did u realize that younger & web 2.0 savvy managers like your boss are the total opposite of those dinasours in Bolehland orgs? hehe juzt my 2 cents.

  6. Bill Stone says:

Why do you have all those irrelevant links to wikipedia articles cluttering your page and distracting the reader from smoothly following your content?

Soooooooo, your aesthetic sensibility is different from some other people. Big deal… what do you expect??? You seem to have decided that you are “right” and they are “wrong”. Why? Have you talked to someone… maybe a psychologist… about this?

    • Muhammad Nur says:

Sorry about the links, it’s for the readers to know more about the terms.

Chill out man, I’m not pointing hand here. If you read the whole article, I never blame anybody. I’m just sharing my opinion.

Really good review! :) and thanks for short description of each gallery!

  8. hongkiat says:

@Nur I’ve gotta agree with you, the MY gov really have to spend some time revising their web design and functionality. Globalization or localization, it’s no reason to be that bad. There’s seriously too many room for improvements.

@da blonde. It sucks, doesn’t it? You always start off so ambitious, professionally wanted to help them get a really good changeover but end up just-doing-what-they-want.

Sometimes I feel bad for corporate junior designers because they totally have no say at all, it makes them tools for shallow decision makers who don’t know much about web, let alone design.

  9. I think designers should keep their themes/template clean and easy for visitors, no matter where they come from. Their websites are only made to provide information to the people, I really don’t think may people care unless they can’t find what they are looking for. The top priority for designers should be easy navigation.

  10. Nice article, but do you really think website designs can be localized? You mean certain designs are a trend in, for example, Holland? I haven’t really noticed that before here.

I gotta admit though, I’m working with some freelance graphic designers in Belgium, and their style is completely different from anything I’ve seen in the Netherlands. A bit more chaotic and daring. Less rules.

To be honest, I really don’t care if it’s a globalized or localized design, as long as it looks great and not TOO familiar. It’s gotta be a little bit original.
